01

Prepare the basics

Do this before the first night.

  • Wash your hands before touching the tattoo.
  • Use fresh bed sheets for the first night.
  • Wear loose, clean clothing that will not rub.
  • Keep pets and animal fur away from the tattoo.
  • Prepare mild fragrance-free soap, clean paper towels, moisturiser and breathable pads.
Main ruleClean hands. Quick wash. Pat dry. Thin layer of moisturiser. Keep friction low.
02

How is your tattoo covered?

Follow the option I gave you after the session.

CHOOSE YOUR HEALING ROUTE
Healing film selectedSwipe down — only this route will be shown.
No healing film selectedSwipe down — only this route will be shown.
Not sure which one?
Healing filmA transparent adhesive second-skin stuck directly over the tattoo and normally left in place for several days.
No healing filmA normal dressing, cling film or absorbent pad that is removed or replaced rather than kept sealed on the skin.

Use the option we discussed after your session. Do not switch methods just because another tattoo healed differently.

02A / 1

No healing film

Normal dressing, cling film or absorbent pad.

Evening finish

Keep the first dressing on until morning.

Daytime finish

Before bed, wash thoroughly and cover again with cling film or a clean disposable absorbent pad.

Continue to Day 1
02A / 2

Day 1

Remove the dressing and clean the tattoo gently.

  1. Wash hands.
  2. Remove the dressing.
  3. Take a quick lukewarm shower.
  4. Use mild fragrance-free soap. Do not scrub.
  5. Pat dry with a clean paper towel.
  6. Apply a very thin layer of moisturiser.
ImportantClean and lightly moisturised. Not wet, greasy or over-soaked.
Continue to the first days
02A / 3

First days

Keep the tattoo clean and lightly moisturised.

3–5× per day while the tattoo is weeping
  1. Wash hands.
  2. Wash gently but thoroughly.
  3. Pat dry.
  4. Apply a very thin layer of moisturiser.
  5. Use a fresh clean breathable dressing.
Clean disposable absorbent pads

Change the pad when damp. Let the skin breathe when it is safe to do so at home. When weeping stops — often around day 2–4 — stop using dressings, moisturise lightly and do not pick or scratch.

02B / 1

Healing film

Second skin / adhesive healing film.

3–5 DAYS Up to 7 days only if comfortable, sealed and not irritated.
Tattoo covered with healing film

Showers are fine. Avoid long hot steam.

Remove early if
  • Fluid leaks out or builds up heavily.
  • The film burns, stings or feels very irritated.
  • The edges lift and the tattoo is no longer sealed.
  • A rash or blisters appear.
Continue to removal
02B / 2

Removing the film

Peel slowly and gently. Never rip the film off.

  1. Lift one edge.
  2. Slowly peel it away, little by little.
  3. Keep the movement controlled. Do not rip.
  4. If the skin pulls, change the angle and slow down.
  5. Wash hands and tattoo, pat dry and apply a thin layer of moisturiser.
After removalContinue with the no-film routine. Do not re-wrap with healing film unless I specifically told you to.
03

Moisturiser

Use less than you think. More is not better.

Bepanthen Tattoo moisturiser
Recommended option

Bepanthen Tattoo

Contains lanolin. If you are sensitive or allergic, use a lanolin-free alternative.

The ruleUse a very thin layer. The tattoo should look lightly moisturised, not wet or greasy. Too much can irritate the skin and slow healing.
04

What to avoid

Common ways people irritate a fresh tattoo.

Water

No baths, pools, hot tubs, lakes or sea water.

Heat

No saunas or steam rooms.

Friction

No scratching, picking, tight synthetics or strong rubbing.

Contamination

Avoid dirty surfaces, gym benches and animal fur.

Skin products

No shaving or self-tan on the tattooed area.

48 HAvoid alcohol
3–7 DAvoid intense workouts
3–4 WAvoid direct sun / sunbeds
AFTERSPF 50 in strong sun

Loose cotton clothing is usually best. Avoid anything that rubs, traps sweat or sticks to the tattoo.

05

Normal or not normal?

Some irritation is expected. Worsening symptoms need attention.

Usually normal
  • Mild redness
  • Mild swelling
  • Soreness
  • Short-term warmth
  • Clear or pink fluid mixed with ink
  • Itching and peeling
  • Small scabs
Get medical advice
  • Pain or redness gets worse after 48 hours
  • Redness spreads
  • Skin feels very hot
  • Pus, bad smell or heavy discharge
  • Fever, chills or red streaks
  • Severe rash or blisters
Urgent or severe?

Do not wait for my reply. Contact a doctor / NHS 111 and seek medical help promptly.

06

Large tattoos

Larger colour, floral and watercolour pieces need a little more patience.

FIRST 3 DAYS Rest helps. Friction makes healing harder.
Soreness & swelling

Large tattoos can stay sore and swollen longer than small tattoos.

Joints & movement

Swelling may feel stronger around joints or areas with more movement.

Rest

Give the area time. Avoid unnecessary friction and pressure.

07

Touch-up check

Wait until the tattoo is fully healed before judging the final result.

4–6 WEEKS Send a clear healed photo if something needs checking.
  • Use daylight.
  • No filters.
  • Make sure the whole healed area is clear.
After healingUse SPF 50 in strong sun. Moisturise the skin when it feels dry.
08
